Gulls Bow Out in NCAA Second Round at #2 Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – The Endicott women’s tennis team competed in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Tournament on Friday morning at #2 Amherst. The national powerhouse earned a 5-0 victory over the Blue and Green to advance to the Third Round of the tournament. Endicott finishes the season at 15-4 (7-1 CCC) while the Jeffs improve to 19-3 as they advance to the next round.

Gulls Bow Out in NCAA Second Round at #2 Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – The Endicott women's tennis team competed in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament on Friday morning at #2 Amherst. The national powerhouse earned a 5-0 victory over the Blue and Green to advance to the Third Round of the tournament. Endicott finishes the season at 15-4 (7-1 CCC) while the Jeffs improve to 19-3 as they advance to the next round.

The Gulls have finished another accomplishing season as they found their way to a third consecutive Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title while advancing to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament two years in a row under the leadership of second year Head Coach, Jeremy Howard.

In doubles play the Jeffs swept the Blue and Green to take the early 3-0 lead. (#1) junior Amy Heacox (Marion, Mass.) and freshman Mackenzie Rhodes (Rye, N.H.) fell 8-0 to the #1 doubles team in the Northeast Region, Jordan Brewer (La Quinta, Calif.) and Gabby Devlin (McLean, Va.). In the #2 and #3 slots, (#2) sophomores Suzie Newman (Dighton, Mass.) and Brittany Potter (Bedford, N.H.) and freshman duo (#3) Jamie Zompa (Marlborough, Mass.) and Skyelar MacLeod (Portsmouth, R.I.) both fell to their opponents 8-0.

Heading into singles play the Jeffs needed just two more victories to move on to the next round. (#3) Rhodes fell to senior Jen Newman (Haverford, Pa.) 6-0, 6-0 while (#4) Potter dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to counterpart Sue Gosh (Gaithersburg, Md.) to secure the 5-0 Amherst victory.

Drawing unfinished matches against ranked opponents, (#1) Heacox was battling with the #2 singles player in the Northeast Region, Brewer falling 6-1 in the first set and losing 2-0 in the second. (#2) Newman also faced a nationally ranked opponent in, Devlin, who holds the #3 rank in the region dropping 6-0, 4-0 before the victory was secured.

Due to having to play indoors because of the weather, Zompa and sophomore Savannah Deady (Andover, Mass.) did not make it to singles play before the match was clinched.
