BEVERLY, Mass. – The 15th-ranked Endicott men’s lacrosse team erased a four-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime with \#7 Stevens, but the Gulls upset bid fell just short as Ducks senior attacker Kevin Rose (Garden City, N.J.) scored the game-winning 1:57 into the extra period.
Endicott (1-2) trailed 7-3 with 14:00 to go in the fourth quarter, but the Gulls rallied behind goals by Jon Thanas (Cumberland, R.I.), Kyle Weber (West Hartford, Conn.) and two in-a-row by Connor McCormack (Norwalk, Conn.) tie the game. Face-off man Sam Ozycz (Cheshire, Conn.) and a strong effort by the Endicott defense helped maintain possession throughout most of the final regulation quarter. Ozycz went 4-for-6 on face-offs, including three straight that led to two goals, and a caused turnover by senior James Sasso (Cheshire, Conn.) started an Endicott goal in transition.
The Blue and Green continue their non-conference schedule against their third nationally-ranked opponent so far this season with a road game against \#5 Amherst on Wednesday, March 14th at 7:00 pm.
Stevens (5-0) saw junior midfielder Rich Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J.) net a game-high four goals and senior defenseman Matt Marks (Cortland, N.Y.) cause six Gulls turnovers with six groundballs. The Ducks take their undefeated record into a home match up with \#2 Tufts on Saturday, March 17th at 1:00 pm.
Just 15 seconds into the first quarter, Stevens scored first after junior midfielder Brain Seldeen (Wayne, N.J.) scooped the groundball off the face-off and beat Endicott goalie Tom Burke (Sudbury, Mass.). Thirteen minutes would go by before the Ducks added another goal, the first by Dupras, to go up 2-0. Both goalies were challenged heavily during that stretch with Burke and his counterpart Eric Yando (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) making four saves each.
Towards the end of the first quarter, Weber scored the first of his two goals in the game to make it 2-1 as senior Brendan Eppley (Darien, Conn.) found the freshman for the open shot.
The second quarter went scoreless until Dupras scored again with just 10 seconds remaining in the half to put Stevens up 3-1.
Endicott’s Brian Estes (Derry, N.H.) opened up the scoring in the third quarter at 12:54 with his fourth goal of the season with an assist to McCormack to make it 3-2. Stevens fired right back nearly three minutes later on a Charles DeCarlo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tally from Alex Hofrichter (Terrance Park, Ohio).
Down 4-2, the Gulls once again pulled within one following the first McCormack’s team-high three goals after collecting a pass from teammate Peter Erickson (Yarmouth, Maine). The Ducks, however, took control of the game with three straight goals including two by Dupras. Leading scorer Harrison Dorne (Morristown, N.J.) netted the second goal of the set an assisted Dupras on the third that came early in the fourth quarter to put Stevens ahead 7-3.
Endicott began its comeback at 11:43 with Thanas’ fifth goal of the season followed by Weber’s second goal of the game just over a minute later. McCormack then went back-to-back at 9:43 and 6:21 to knot the score at 7-7. Assists for McCormack’s goals went to Estes and freshman midfielder Harrison Cotter (Lordship, Conn.).
In the overtime period, Endicott won the face-off to gain possession but a turnover gave the ball back to the Ducks and after a series of wide shot attempts, Rose finally ended the game with his seventh goal of 2012.
Defensively, Endicott sophomore defender Breck Merritt (Weston, Mass.) had three caused turnovers with eight groundballs to lead the defense. Captains Greg Szkop (New Britain, Conn.) and Michael Armstrong (Winchester, Mass.) also chipped in with two caused turnovers apiece. Burke finished the game with 12 saves, including five that came in the fourth quarter comeback.
