2012 CCC Men's Lacrosse Preseason Poll Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Endicott men’s lacrosse team, the 13th ranked team in all of NCAA Division III, enters the 2012 season as the preseason favorite to win the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship for the third straight season. The Gulls have made eight straight conference title games and walked away with six championships dating back to the 2004 season.
The preseason poll was voted upon by the league’s head coaches and announced today but CCC Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye.
Endicott claimed all nine first place votes and totaled 81 points to take the top-ranking over runner up Western New England (72). Rounding out the standings were Roger Williams (57), Gordon (56), Salve Regina (47), University of New England (31), Curry (28), Nichols (17) and Wentworth (16).
The Gulls and Golden Bears faced off in last year’s CCC Championship as Endicott avenged a regular season loss to Western New England by winning 13-12 in overtime on the road. The Blue and Green went on to the NCAA Division III Tournament where they hosted a first round game against Springfield, advanced with a 6-5 win over the Pride, and fellow just short of upsetting the \#1-ranked team in the country for the second time in one season with a 12-8 loss to eventual NCAA Champion Salisbury.
Head coach Sean Quirk, who enters his 15th year at the helm of the Gulls men’s lacrosse program, has had tremendous success in league play with a 95-8 (.922) record against CCC opponents but knows that past triumphs have no bearing on how the team approaches its lofty 2012 goals.
“The CCC has gotten much stronger over the past few years,” said Quirk. “The reason we play a non-conference schedule packed with teams ranked top-20 in the country is to prepare for our conference schedule, the conference tournament, and the NCAA Tournament. League games are so important for our success and our guys know they need to be focused in order to achieve what we want to achieve this season.”
After a string of four non-conference games to start the season that feature three nationally-ranked opponents (\#6 Amherst, \#8 RIT, \#9 Stevens Tech), the Gulls begin defense of the 2011 CCC Championship with a road match up against Salve Regina on March 17th. Endicott also has non-conference games against \#3 Tufts and \#18 Bowdoin before the CCC Tournament begins on April 28th.
