Greg Szkop among Capital One Academic All-District First Team winners
BEVERLY, Mass. – Gulls senior men's lacrosse defenseman Greg Szkop (New Britain, Conn.) was among just the 11 student-athletes from Distrct I to be selected to the Capital one Academic All-District Men's At-Large First Team, making him eligible for Academic All-America status which will be announced on Tuesday, June 5th.
2011-12 Capital One Academic All-District Men's At-Large Teams
BEVERLY, Mass. – Gulls senior men's lacrosse defenseman Greg Szkop (New Britain, Conn.) was among just the 11 student-athletes from Distrct I to be selected to the Capital one Academic All-District Men's At-Large First Team, making him eligible for Academic All-America status which will be announced on Tuesday, June 5th.
The Men's At-Large program allows for nominations to be accepted on student-athletes who have achieved a 3.30 GPA or better, is of sophomore standing or above, has completed at least one year at his institution and participated in at least 50 percent of his team's games. Sports eligible in the Men's At-Large program include fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling.
The award is nominated by and voted upon by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and has been recognizing thousands of deserving student-athletes since the program's inception in the 1950's.
Szkop becomes the first ever Gulls men's lacrosse player to earn Capital One Academic All-District honors and joins Colleen Pepin (women's soccer), Gregory Capece (men's soccer), Mike Lane (football), Mike Zupkosky (football), and Kate Cioffi (women's tennis) as award winners from the 2011-12 academic year.
A three-time CCC Academic All-Conference winner, a member of the Endicott Academic Varsity Club, and a frequent name on the Dean's List, Szkop has accumulated a 3.70 GPA as a Sport Management major at Endicott. He complemented his academic record with numerous internships including stints with the Boston Bruins, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the New Britain Rock Cats and the Canterbury School Athletic Department.
On the field, Szkop was a captain and an integral part of the Endicott men's lacrosse team that captured their third ECAC Division III New England Championship. Szkop, who started in 20-of-21 games this season, totaled 21 caused turnovers and 33 groundballs for Endicott's stingy defensive top line. He was named an All-CCC Second Team Defenseman for his efforts on the lacrosse field. Szkop also captained the Gulls men's ice hockey program that reached the ACHA Regionals this winter.
Szkop has also been a valued member of his community, serving a number of youth hockey and lacrosse teams in Massachusetts and Connecticut, teaming up with organizations such as the Big Brother/Big Sister Program, the Main Street Beverly Community Service Project and Beverly Bootstraps.
