Second half defensive effort stymies Gulls
Feb. 4, 2009
BEVERLY, Mass. - Colby-Sawyer College got 22 points from Jon Chaloux (Barre, Vt.) and the Chargers' defense held the Gulls to just 56 points on 21-of-60 shooting (35%) as CSC downed Endicott, 67-56, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference game on Wednesday evening in Beverly, Mass. The win improves Colby-Sawyer to 15-4 overall and 7-1 in Conference play, while Endicott falls to 8-12 and 3-5 in the TCCC.
The opening 10 minutes of the first half was a back-and-forth affair as the two squads tried to find an early rhythm. Graham Whitelaw (Kennebunk, Maine) buried a three-pointer at the 14 minute mark to give the Gulls a slight 13-11 advantage. Colby-Sawyer responded in a big way as Jon Charloux scored 15 points in a 17-4 run that spanned just under seven minutes, blowing the game open in favor of the visitors, 28-17.
The lead would hang around the double-digit mark for the remainder of the half, that is until Graham Whitelaw drove the paint and beat the buzzer with a nifty up-and-under layup. The hard-fought score sent the Gulls into the break trailing by eight, 36-28.
The late momentum carried over into the second half as the hosts opened the stanza with a 14-6 spurt that was capped by a Whitelaw three-ball. The sides would trade buckets for the next four minutes as the score remained gridlocked at 48-all with 10 minutes left in regulation.
The Chargers' defense kicked into gear as the clock ticked down, helping Colby-Sawyer go on a 15-3 burst in an eight minute span. Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine) got the run started as he dialed in from behind the arc, followed by back-to-back lay-ins from senior Duncan Szeliga (Newmarket, N.H.). Bardaglio struck again, this time in the paint off a dish from Matt Lemieux (Manchester, N.H.) to make it 60-51 in favor of the guests. James Tobin then put the game away with a contested layup with 2:02 left in the contest, making it a 12 point game.
The 12 point lead proved sufficient for the guests, as they were able to make their free-throws down the stretch to win by 11. CSC held Endicott to just eight points in the final 10:27 of action. The Gulls were outrebounded 42-30, including 30-17 on the defensive end.
Colby-Sawyer was paced by Chaloux's 22 points and 11 rebounds. The junior forward also had six blocks in the win. Matt Lemieux, who leads the league in assists per game against conference opponents, did not disappoint as he had seven helpers and 13 points in 36 minutes. Bardaglio also reached double-figures for the Chargers, as he hit a trio of three's and finished the night with 13 points.
Endicott was led by Graham Whitelaw's 13 points. Kevin McGuire (New City, N.Y.) had 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting while Justin Martin (Cromwell, Conn.) finished the night with seven points and six boards. Junior guard Bobby Montrond (Brockton, Mass.) had 10 points, six assists and five steals in the setback.
Colby-Sawyer looks to win its fourth-straight and its ninth in the last 10 outings on Saturday as the Chargers travel to Salve Regina. Endicott hopes to rebound on Saturday afternoon when the Gulls host Regis College for a 3:00 p.m. tip.
