SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Endicott women's soccer team suffered their first defeat of the 2012 season on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to host Union College at their four-team kickoff tournament.
Junior goalkeeper Natalie Wyrsch (Dover, N.H.) made seven saves, but allowed a 25th minute goal by Jennifer Mansfield (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), her fourth of the year that was all the offense the game would see. Mollie Gilchrist Johnsonville, N.Y.) picked up her first assist of the season by playing a low ball into the box for Mansfield to finish.
The Gulls matched opportunities with their hosts, with each team firing 12 shots and taking four corner kicks in the contest. The Gulls even had a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, but were unable to get a ball past senior goalkeeper Kayla Marti (Newburgh, N.Y.), who made seven stops for the shutout, her first of the year.
Chelsea Garlock (Meriden, Conn.) and Nicole Fournier (Milford, Mass.) combined for five shots on goals for Endicott, who was shutout just four times a season ago. Endicott has still outscored their opponents 10-2 in their first three games of 2012, but sees their record dip to 2-1.
The Gulls will try to get back on track on Sunday afternoon when they finish their trip to Schenectady with a 3:00 pm game against Husson, who battle Plattsburgh State today at 4:00.
Plattsburgh State will turn around and play the hosts tomorrow at 12:00 PM, as Union tries to improve upon an unblemished mark of 4-0.
