UNE upsets Endicott with first road victory; Gulls fall 72-48

Beverly, Mass. – The University of New England men’s basketball squad countered Endicott’s cold shooting with a hot hand from the floor, as the Nor’easters hit 50.9% (28-of-55) of their shots en route to a 72-48 victory over their TCCC opponent.

Endicott (14-8, 6-4 TCCC) drops back-to-back games for the first time since December 8th after struggling offensively against UNE, making 35.1% of their shots including 2-of-10 from beyond the arc. Freshman Tyler Burkhart (Cromwell, Conn.) was the only Endicott player to reach double figures, scoring 11 points off the bench on 4-of-7 from the field with two assists.
UNE (4-18, 2-8 TCCC) had four players reach double digit points with junior forward Ryan Knotek (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) netting a game-high 16 points. Knotek hit 7-of-13 attempts from the floor including two three-pointers to go along with four rebounds, a block and an assist. Nor’easters’ freshman Charles Fenner (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half, finishing 3-of-4 from long range. Fenner was aggressive on the boards, grabbing nine rebounds to lead all players.
The Nor’easters biggest contribution was the offensive output by their bench as UNE’s reserves outscored the Gulls 35-27. Guards Chas Rentrope (Peoria, Ariz.) and Marcus Winn (Austin, Texas) combined for 25 points and even forced turnovers as each player had three steals. Sophomore forward J.D. Winn (Austin, Texas) even contributed with five assists off the bench before fouling out late in the second half.
In the opening half, Endicott went down seven points at 19-12 with 9:54 remaining until halftime before pulling even at 19-19 thanks to five points from Aaron Karkow (Uncasville, Conn.) and a layup by Erik Callo (Southington, Conn.).
UNE, however, responded by scoring 13 of the next 14 points to race out to a 12-point advantage. Chas Rentrope scored six of his 14 points during the run that lasted 3:35. The Nor’easters and Gulls would finish out the half with UNE holding a 39-27 lead.
The Gulls scored a couple of baskets early in the second half, but were held scoreless for nearly five minutes in the middle of the period. UNE took advantage of their cold shooting opponents by stretching out their lead to as large as 29 points with 4:19 left in regulation before finishing off the 72-48 win.
The Nor’easters never trailed in this game. UNE outrebounded Endicott 40-26. The Gulls forced 22 turnovers, creating 14 steals but also committed 19 miscues of their own.
Endicott faces Salves Regina, also 6-4 in the TCCC, on Saturday, February 8th at 3:00 pm. UNE travels to Colby-Sawyer for a 3:00 pm tip-off on the same day.
