BEVERLY, Mass. — The No. 4/5 Endicott baseball team defeated Gordon, 11-1, in Conference of New England (CNE) action on Monday evening at North Field.
With the win, Gulls' head coach Bryan Haley improved to 500-245 (.671) overall in his career, all at Endicott.
Haley is currently the winningest active coach in the department (by victories) and has a chance to break into the NCAA D3 Winningest Active Coaches Top-25 group by season's end (based on winning percentage). The cutoff for that list entering the 2025 campaign was a .670 winning percentage.
WP (3-0): John Connolly (Attleboro, Mass.) — 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K
LP (1-1): Paul Donnelly (Middleton, Mass.) — 4 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
John Mulready (Peabody, Mass.) blasted a three-run rock shot to left field with two outs in the first inning and the Gulls piled on the rest of the way.
The Blue and Green scored four more in the fifth (three bases loaded walks, fielder's choice) and three additional runs in the sixth — highlighted by a Cade Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) two-run double.
Gordon prevented the mercy-rule in the bottom of the seventh by scratching across a run on a bloop single to shallow center field.
However, the Gulls quickly got the run back after AJ Hamm (Shrewsbury, Mass.) drilled a double down the third base line to score Trevor Kamuda (Groveland, Mass.) all the way from first. Kamuda evaded the tag at the plate to put the Gulls up by the 10-run threshold (conference mercy rule).
Jake Harmony (Fairfield, Conn.) tossed a clean 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth to wrap up the 11-1 victory.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Endicott is 48-12 all-time against Gordon (winners of 11 straight, 27-9 at home).
- The Gulls improved to 13-0 at North Field this season.
- Mulready belted his 19th career homer in the first (2nd this season; tied sixth all-time).
- In the second inning, MacDougall (LF), Liponis (SS), and Mulready (C) cut down a run at the plate to end the frame and preserve the shutout, at that time.
- MacDougall picked up the ball near the left field corner and fired a strike to Liponis at the foul line to complete phase one of the play. Liponis then made a quick turn and one-hopped a throw to Mulready, who backhanded it smoothly and applied a perfectly timed tag to prevent the run from scoring.
- Connolly returned to the mound for the first time since March 22 at Nichols.
- Zach Stephenson (Mansfield, Mass.) registered his second straight three-hit game out of the leadoff spot.
